Overview

INTRODUCTION  ::
“ Annapurna – I ”  mountain is the lowest 8000m peak in the world and is situated in Nepal. This is the 11th highest mountain in Nepal.   “Annapurna -  I”  was first climbed by a French expedition in 1950.  There are four summits with different altitudes in the Annapurna mountain range and the entire massif forms a barrier on the northern flank of Pokhara valley.

The main summit  namely “Annapurna – I”  with an altitude of 8091 meters  is located to the western ridge  of Annapurna sanctuary.

A French Expedition led by Maurice Herzong  explored the Kali Gandaki valley in 1950.  After descending from Dhaulagiri  , they found it too  difficult to find a way to the foot of the mountain because of the inaccurate maps.  So they eventually   turned their attention to climb the mount  “ Annapurna – I ” via the “Miristi Khola” route located down the north face of the mount
“Annapurna – I”.

They succeeded in the climbing a top of the Annapurna – I on June 1950. The Summiteers suffered frostbite on descends and were finally evacuated back to the road head in India. It was not climbed again until 1970, when British army expedition followed essentially the same route as Herzog.

At same time Cris Boning led successful British expedition to the very steep and difficult south face. With only 109 ascents, Annapurna has had fewer successful climbs than any other 8000m peak in Nepal.
