The mount “Kumbhakarna” is situated at a distance of 11 km to the west of the summit of the mount “Kanchenjunga”both the himalyan peaks are located in the eastern border of Nepal. Coloquilly Kumbhakarna is also know as “Jannu”.
Not with standing lower, it is a very difficult peak, with a summit pyramid that is steep on all sides. The first ascent and "standard" route is a complex and difficult, though not extreme, route up the southeast Ridge, from the Yamatari Glacier. Neighboring peak Jannu East, 7468m, was unclimbed till 1997 AD.
On the climbing side, no experience is necessary, however you must be familiar with alpine environments and must understand the risks that camping and climbing above the snowline posture. Previous Nepal or Pakistan trekking experience or long route hiking experience is desirable. If you have any doubts, please discuss with us.
LEGEND :
Kumbhakara Mountain’s name is the derived from the name of the giant prince Kumbhakarna; who was the younger brother of the giant king Rawan from the ancient Sri - Lanka.
As mentioned in the Ramayana epic that took place some 14000 years before Christ. The giant Kumbhakarna had fought with “lord Rama” . Kumbhakarna used to sleep for the consecutive six month and used to eat for the next consecutive six months.
Once, when he was doing a hard penance, lord Bhrama was very much pleased and asked him to get some boon; and the giant pleaded - “ let me have a boon of six month’s sleeping and six month’s eating.”
Lord Bhrama offered him this blessing; and then after that, he used to sleep in such a deep sleep that even if some one would march ahead through his body, he wouldn’t notice. So in Nepal, if some one sleeps a lot, he is said to be a sleeper like the giant Kumbhakarna.
